Abstract

This study identifies politeness strategies and analyzes the sub-categories used in Indonesia vs. China women's double badminton Olympics YouTube comments. This study used Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory about politeness strategies. This study uses descriptive qualitative analysis to obtain data from the Olympics' YouTube comments entitled "Women's Doubles Badminton Gold Medal Match Tokyo 2020." Based on the analysis, the result showed that 50 comments contained politeness strategies. From the 50 comments, there are 22 bald-on-record strategies, 13 positive politeness, 15 off-record strategies, and no negative politeness. In addition, the bald-on-record strategy is the most dominant strategy used in Indonesia vs. China women's double badminton Olympics 2020 YouTube comments. The reason why negative politeness strategies were not found in this comment study could be due to several factors. One is the nature of comments more likely to express appreciation, admiration, and excitement toward the discussed subject. The study found that compliments were the most widely used sub-strategy because people desire to convey appreciation, build positive bonds in the online community, and maintain a polite attitude and respect for athletes' achievements.
