Abstract

The purposes of this study are to investigate the existential crisis described in Matt Haig's The Midnight Library and to explain the main character's defense mechanisms in making decisions. This study uses a qualitative method that presents the analysis in a descriptive essay. To guide, Søren Kierkegaard's (1946) perspective on existentialism and Anna Freud's (1937) theory of defense mechanisms are used. The categories of actions and expressions depicted in the novel are categorized by existentialist themes and are described using a psychoanalytic approach. This study concludes that the existential crises found in this novel include; existence precedes essence, freedom, anxiety, alienation, and nothingness which causes defense mechanisms; repression, projection, denial, reaction formulation, and rationalization that affect how the main character’s decision-making develops.
