Abstract

The aims of this study are to examine and reveal the types and functions of impoliteness in conversations between judges and participants, and among participants at MasterChef Australia season 12. Impoliteness Strategies Used in MasterChef Australia Season 12 in Cooking Talent Show. In this study, the theory used is the impoliteness strategy theory by Culpeper (1996), which divides impoliteness strategies into 5 categories. The categories are direct impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, bald on the record, and withhold politeness. In addition, the writer also analyzes the function of impoliteness according to Culpeper's theory (2011). According to Culpeper, the function of impoliteness is divided into three categories: affective impoliteness, coercive impoliteness, and entertaining impoliteness. This study uses a qualitative method that aims to analyze examples of impoliteness strategies used in MasterChef Australia season 12. The writer found that there were thirty-one utterances containing of impoliteness, both between the judges and the participants, and among participants. Type of impoliteness that was often used was positive impoliteness consisting eleven times. The writer found all types of impoliteness, are bald on record, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. Besides, the writer found all the functions of impoliteness, are affective impoliteness, coercive impoliteness, and entertaining impoliteness. The function that is often used is coercive, which occurs fifteen times. In conclusion, MasterChef Australia season 12 presents various kinds of dishes made by judges and participants and teamwork to attract the attention of the audience, but this event also showed that the comments directed at judges with participants and among participants are not always positive, which means the judges and participants and among participants sometimes say words that are impolite, insulting, sarcastic, taking advantage of their position, and so on. Negative comments like that can attract the attention of the audience; sometimes an entertainment program at least includes negative things, as mentioned previously, so that the program does not feel too flat when it is watched.
