Abstract

This study aims to reveal the impoliteness strategies used in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) movies and their functions. This study applies the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in descriptive text. To guide this study, the writer uses the theory of Jonathan Culpeper (1996) about impoliteness strategies. The sources of the data were utterances of all the characters in the movie. The analysis results show there are four types of impoliteness strategies used; bald on record impoliteness with 23 utterances (34%), positive impoliteness with 28 utterances (41%), negative impoliteness with 14 utterances (21%), and sarcasm or mock politeness with 3 utterances (4%). In conclusion, the most frequent impoliteness strategies used by the characters are positive impoliteness and only ‘withhold politeness,’ which is not found in the movie. The result also shows that all three functions of impoliteness were used; affective, coercive, and entertaining. There were 16 utterances which is the most amount found to have an affective function and produced with a bald-on-record strategy. It can be concluded that the characters frequently produced impoliteness strategies with affective functions to express the anger that the interlocutor caused, and they attacked the interlocutor directly.
