Abstract

The study entitled "Systemic Racism Portrayed in The Movie When They See Us." This study aims to discover the systemic racism portrayed in the movie and how the characters deal with systemic racism in the movie. The study uses qualitative descriptive analysis to break down every piece of information in the movie into words and phrases. The data source for the analysis is the four-part miniseries When They See Us, directed by Ava DuVernay and released in 2019. The study used Joe R. Feagin's theory on systemic racism (2006). The findings reveal that systemic racism portrayed in the movie "When They See Us" encompasses systemic racism in criminal law, systemic racism in unwritten policies, and systemic racism in daily practices. Meanwhile, the characters deal with systemic racism in criminal laws, systemic racism in unwritten policies, and systemic racism in daily practices.
