Abstract

This study aims to analyze racial prejudice toward African Americans reflected in a novel, and to describe how does the main character deal with racial prejudice in the novel. The object of the study is a novel entitled An American Marriage by Tayari Jones (2018). This novel narrates the experiences of Celestial and Roy, a young African American couple whose aspirations are shattered after Roy is unfairly accused of a crime he did not commit. This study employs a qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of text within the novel. To guide this study, the writer utilizes the perspective of Gordon W. Allport (1954) in The Nature of Prejudice. The result of the study found that they are three stages of racial prejudice: verbal rejection, discrimination, and physical attacks against African Americans reflected in the novel. Also, they are three strategies: ego defenses, withdrawal and passivity, and enhanced striving, that the main character deals with racial prejudice reflected in the novel.
