Abstract
This study aims to analyze how the issue of cultural identity experienced by Darling as the main character in the novel We Need New Names (2013) by NoViolet Bulawayo and its impacts in adapting the new culture. It applies Stuart Hall’s theory of Cultural Identity and Diaspora as the framework. The qualitative method is used to analyze the data. The researcher focuses on the process of being American that Darling does to survive to live in America as an immigrant in the context of cultural identity. The analysis of this study shows that Darling struggles to adapt the new culture while maintaining her motherland culture. The results of this study demonstrate that she mimics the new culture to survive living in America. Furthermore, she is trapped in double cultural identity due to the impacts of cultural identity that she experienced.
