Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stereotypes towards minorities and how the characters resist the stereotypes represented in the novel Sex and Vanity (2020) by Kevin Kwan. Focuses on Chinese characters, this study applies the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in phrases. To guide this study, the writer uses the perspective of Orientalism Theory by Edward Said (1978). Then, the writer collected the data by highlighting the relevant events that were applied in the dialogue and narration of the novel. The result of this study shows there are stereotypes towards minorities, especially Chinese and Asian-Americans, by dividing minorities as the other and exotic. The West depicts the East based on appearance, intelligence, and behavior. Additionally, the stereotypes that the West gives to the East cause resistance. The characters resist by self-defense and speaking up about the truth of the stereotypes.
