Abstract

The aim of this study entitled The Meaningless of Life as Portrayed in The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka: Existentialism Perspective is to examine the major principles of Sartrean existentialism revealed in the main character of this novella since Gregor Samsa’s transformation changes his life and makes it difficult for him to find the life essence in his meaningless life. The object used for this study is The Metamorphosis (1915) novella written by Franz Kafka. The writer uses the Jean- Paul Sartre’s existentialism theory to guide this study. Those principles are existence precedes essence, responsibility, and freedom. The data of this study are narrative sentences and dialogue quotes related to Gregor Samsa’s daily life and the impact on his life in the novella. The result of this study indicated that the major principle of existentialism experienced by Gregor Samsa occurred in his life as well as the impact that he experienced during his life after he transformed into a giant insect.
