Abstract
The objectives of this research was to determine the effectiveness of using the small group discussion technique on student achievement in reading comprehension of procedure text for grade 9 students at Mts Al-hoeriyah Rumpin. This research was conducted by using quantitative methods with a quasi- experimental pre-test and post-test procedures. The population in this study were 50 students from a total of two classes. The sample were 25 students (25 students in the experimental class and 25 students in the control class). This research was carried out by coundacting pretest and post-test procedures. A pre-test was given to see students' basic reading abilities before implementing the small group discussion method. The post-test meansure the effectiveness of implementing the small group discussion method on student reading achievement. To collect the data, the writer used a pre-test and post-test. The result of the writer showed that the average pre-test score in the control class was 50.01 and in the experimental class the average score in the experimental class was 50.08. After given treatment, the average post-test score in the control class was 64.74 and the average in the experimental class was 78.56. The research results show that there was a significant difference in the post-test of the two classes. Results of the t-test analysis show that the sig (2-tailed) was 0.000 which was less than 0.05 or can be called H0 rejected and H1 accepted. Based on the results above, you can it was concluded that the small group discussion technique was effective in improving reading comprehension in procedure text and from the effect size that the influence of the small group discussion strategy on Students' reading comprehension was 11%, from this it can be seen that reading strategies with small group discussions can improve students' reading comprehension. This showed that the effect of small group discussion on students reading comprehension has a moderate effect according to Graverr's criteria.
