Abstract

This study entitled “Traumatic Experiences in White Oleander (1999) Novel by Janet Fitch” analyzed the traumatic experiences of the main character named Astrid Magnussen in the novel White Oleander (1999). The objectives of the study were to examine the symptoms of traumatic experiences in the novel and how the main character deals with her trauma in White Oleander (1999) by Janet Fitch. This study used qualitative research method with the analysis presented in the form of a narrative. In order to guide this study, the writer applied the perspective of Cathy Caruth (1995) in trauma and memory. The results of this study showed that the main character exhibits four symptoms of trauma, which are delayed processing manifest in dreams, flashbacks, and intrusive thoughts, negative cognition and mood, arousal, and avoidance. The main character coped with her trauma by expressing it through art and utilizing re-telling as a form of healing.
