Abstract

This thesis is entitled “Racial discrimination in the West Side Story movie by Steven Spielberg”. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the main character potrayed racial discrimination and to find out how the main character deals with racial discrimination. This study uses qualitative methods and uses Gordon Allport's (1954) theory, which focuses on racial discrimination. The results of this study show that the writer found racial discrimination potrayed by the main character, there are: stereotypes, verbal antagonism, segregation, and physical attack. This study also shows how the main character dealing with racial discrimination such as resisting and avoiding. This study explains that every racial discrimination gives a different response and it is affected by the characteristics of the protagonist.
