Abstract

This study aims to investigate the Oppression experienced by American-born family groups of Indian Descent in Devi S. Laskar's The Atlas of Reds and Blues (2019). Additionally, this study will analyze what kind of oppression the characters experienced. This analysis uses a qualitative method to describe, analyze, and interpret the narrative elements, with data source from quotations in the novel. This study use Patricia Hill Collins’s theory presented in Black Feminist Thought (1990) as the basic concept and framework. The results found in this study show that the characters in the novel experience oppression, not only verbally but also in the form of physical violence and more severe forms of mistreatment. Oppression can be perpetrated by individuals or groups. The majority group ends up restricting the freedom of the minority. Moreover, it was found how the characters deal with the oppression with complete patience and even put up resistance.
