Abstract

This study examined the types and functions of impoliteness strategies used by haters of Amber Heard. The writer employed a qualitative method, obtaining data by observing comments from Amber Heard's haters on NBC News' Instagram. The writer applied Jonathan Culpeper's (1996) theory of impoliteness strategies to identify the types used by these haters. Additionally, Jonathan Culpeper's (2011) theory was employed to support the identification of functions used by Amber Heard's haters on NBC News' Instagram. The study revealed that 30 data of impoliteness strategies were employed by haters of Amber Heard. The most dominant type was positive impoliteness strategies 33% (10 data) and bald-on- record impoliteness strategies 27% (8 data). Moreover, negative impoliteness strategies and sarcasm or mock impoliteness strategies were less frequently used, both 20% (6 data each). However, withhold impoliteness strategies were not found in this study, as they typically occur in direct communication. Furthermore, the writer identified two functions most frequently used by Amber Heard's haters on NBC News' Instagram: affective and entertaining. However, the coercive function of impoliteness was not found in the comments analyzed in this study.
