Abstract
This study discussed the signs found in the illustrations from five Newsweek news magazine covers edition published between the range of the year 2022. This study aimed to identify the signs found in illustrations of Newsweek news magazine covers and to describe the meanings of signs found in illustrations of Newsweek news magazine covers. Moreover, the signs were analysed based on the theory of Charles Sanders Peirce's and supported by the denotation and connotation meaning theory of Roland Barthes’ theory. The research method used a descriptive qualitative approach. Therefore, this study found 13 visual sign and 17 verbal sign that were used to convey hidden informations and messages to the reader about the issue in each edition. In illustration of Newsweek magazine cover, the visual sign was used to maintain interest with the use of colour and the picture and create desire as the reader felt included in the issue. Meanwhile, the verbal sign was used to persuade the reader to consider some acts to face the issues with the short phrase and provide brief information about the topic that is being discussed in each exact edition. Therefore, the semiosis process based on Peirce’s theory and the context of what was written on the article in the issue in the magazine help to add more context for the connotation meaning.
