Abstract

The aims of the study are to figure out the types of politeness strategies employed by the netizen in giving comments towards Cristiano Ronaldo‟s speech on BeanymanSports' YouTube channel and to analyze how politeness strategies applied by the netizen in giving comments towards Cristiano Ronaldo‟s speech on BeanymanSports‟ YouTube channel. The object of this study is English comments done by the netizen in BeanymanSports' YouTube channel about Cristiano Ronaldo‟s ceremony in Al-Nassr. This study applies a qualitative research method as the analysis presented in the form of table and text. In order to guide this study, the writer uses the theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) and also the theory of ways of using politeness strategies by Kierkegaard (1991). The analysis shows that English comments have four politeness strategies: positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on-record strategy, and off-record strategy. Additionally, they use direct and indirect communicating as a way of using politeness strategies. Thus, netizens do politeness strategies and also the ways of using politeness strategies in giving comments towards Cristiano Ronaldo‟s ceremony in Al-N2assr on BeanymanSports' YouTube channel.
