Abstract
This thesis analyzes the racial discrimination portrayed in the novel This is My America by Kim Johnson. The topic of this thesis is Racial Discrimination toward Black people or African Americans. The title of this thesis was “The Portrayal of Racial Discrimination Toward African American in Kim Johnson’s This is My America”. The object of this study is a literary work such as a novel titled This is My America (2020) written by Kim Johnson. The novel tells about the Beaumont Family, an African American family living in Texas. They got racial discrimination, and their father and brother were arrested because they were accused of murdering white people. The protagonist, Tracy Beaumont, is against racial discrimination to set free her father and brother. This thesis used the racial discrimination theory from Blank et al. (2004) in the book “Measuring Racial Discrimination” to guide the writer in analyzing racial discrimination. This thesis used descriptive qualitative methods as an analysis presented in the text. The results of this thesis revealed that racial discrimination against black people happened in two types such as explicit discrimination and unconscious discrimination. Unconscious discrimination is the most common discrimination in this novel. The protagonist has two terms for dealing with racial discrimination: permits discrimination and conducts actions against discrimination. Conducting actions against discrimination is the most common action the protagonist takes to deal with discrimination.
