Abstract

Trauma is often the main theme in a literary work as the case in the novel entitled Dear Edward (2020) by Ann Napolitano. This study aims to reveal Edward's traumatic experience due to the plane crash and loss of his entire family and to analyze how the main character deals with his traumatic experience. This study uses qualitative research methods because the analysis is presented in the form of textual interpretation using a narrative type of research design because the discussion mainly explores the life experiences of a character in the novel. To answer the problems in the study the writer applies the concept of trauma proposed by Caruth (1996). The study results stated that the traumatic symptoms experienced by Edward were intrusion or re-experience, avoidance, negative cognition and mood, and arousal and reactivity. The avoidance symptoms were the most dominant symptoms that Edward experienced because as long as he experiences trauma, Edward mostly avoids anything that reminds him of his trauma. Apart from the symptoms of trauma experienced by Edward, this study also shows how Edward dealing with his trauma through three steps of recovery including narrative, connection, and finding the new meaning of life.
