Abstract

The title of this study is “Racial Discrimination Towards The Chinese Descent In C Pam Zhang’s How Much of These Hills Is Gold.” The aim of this study was to describe the issue of racial discrimination found in the novel How Much of These Hills Is Gold by C pam Zhang (2020). This novel told a story about a Chinese immigrant family that has to experience racism during the gold rush era. Poverty and the different race they were with the place they lived make it difficult to survive. Hence, all that is left of this family are two children namely Lucy and Sam who are linked by their Chinese heritage. This study used a qualitative method to describe, analyzed, and interpreted the narrative elements and the data source was taken from the quotation from the novel. Therefore, to complete the study, the data were analyzed using Sean Elias and Joe R. Feagin’s (2016) theory in their theory book entitled Racial Theories in Social Science as the basic concept and framework. The result of this study showed that racial discrimination in the novel happened not only verbally but also in the form of physical violence and even worse. Racial discrimination can be done by individuals or groups. A group of the majority will eventually limit the freedom of the minority. Thus, there are also found that the character tried to resist the treatment of racial discrimination in the way of ignorance and fighting back against the person or group that is being racist to them.
