Abstract

The study entitled “Women’s Resistance Against Patriarchal Culture in Etaf Rum’s A Woman Is No Man” aims to analyze forms of patriarchal culture and women characters resisting the patriarchal culture. The story presents a Palestinian girl named Isra who experienced patriarchal cultural practices and tried to resist the practices that shackled her. This study discusses the form of patriarchal cultural practices and the way the female character struggles to resist patriarchal cultural practices. The writer used the qualitative method in analyzing the data. The theory by Sylvia Walby (1990) and Kate Millet (1970) is used to analyze the topic of this study. As a result, the writer found this study shows there are four aspects of a form of patriarchal culture, there are arranged married for women, men considered as a decision-maker in the woman’s life, son preference, and violence against women. Moreover, the writer found women’s resistance to the patriarchal culture by freely determining choices such as decision-making, birth control, and getting an education.
