Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the issue of gender performance in two picture books are My Princess Boy (2009) by Cherly Kilodavis and Tomboy (2014) by Liz Prince. This study uses a qualitative method that presents the analysis in pictures and writing. To guide this research, Judith Butler's (1999) perspective on gender performativity is used. The results of this study indicate that there is a gender performance caused by the main characters in two children's picture books who have different stories, one tells about a man who wears female attributes and has women characters, and the second story is about a woman who wears male attributes, and has the character of a man. With the different categorizations of appearance, nature, and actions between girls and boys, the picture book which is the object of this study represents feminine and masculine gender performance. Feminine gender performance is reflected in male characters who like to wear female attributes and are very feminine, meanwhile, in the second drawing book female main characters who like to wear male attributes and enter into masculine gender performance where they are described as individuals who have produced work.
