Abstract
This study is aimed at analyzing language style and factors that influence the choice of language style used by Barack Obama on his Twitter accounts. The analysis was based on the five language styles proposed in Joos’s theory and four factors proposed in Holmes's theory. The study used a qualitative method in which the data was collected by reading then finding out the language style based on sentence structure and word choice. Finally, finding the factors that influence the language style. The results of the study indicated that Barack Obama used five language styles that are frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate style which were influenced by factors participants, setting, topic, and function. The frozen language style is only found in political posts while the intimate style is only found in private life. In contrast to other language styles, consultative language is the most commonly used. It is influenced by several factors because the tweets are presented to all of his followers, particularly his political colleagues as participants both in serious or relaxed situations. In the settings, Barack Obama portrays himself as president and former president in a formal situation and as one of his followers in a casual situation. In addition, he used a consultative style in private life and politics to give the impression of being an authoritative, friendly, and warm leader. Keywords: barack obama, language style, social media, sociolinguistics, twitter.
