Abstract

This study aimed to analyze woman's freedom against patriarchy in the Mona Lisa Smile movie. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data used theory of Tyson L (2006) to discover the feminism issue. This movie shows how women should be equal to men in a patriarchal society. Women had the right to choose their way and work even if they had married. Women are not born to be a housewife. The data were found in 10 scenes. This study findings showed feminism issue in the main character of the Mona Lisa Smile movie. The movie reflects the women's conditions that still hold the tradition controlled by patriarchal. Being a wife and mother were consider as women's most significant professions. Katherine made the students realize that they had the right to show their capability in public as men had. Katherine made her students believe that they could do two things simultaneously: having family and their goals. It could be concluded that Katherine Watson speaks in the film; in all utterances in the movie Mona Lisa Smile, there were 10 times of utterances containing feminism issue.
