Abstract

This study aims to reveal the oppression toward labor in the novel The Narrow Road to the Deep North that is written by Richard Flanagan in 2013. This novel potrays of Prisoners of Wars (POWs) as labor who are oppressed by Japanese. Thus, the study focuses on the oppression and the resistance to against the oppression which describes by characters. The theory about power by Michel Foucault (1980) which the book entitled Power/Knowledge is used to conduct this study which discusses about power, oppression, and resistance. Qualitative approach is applied in research process that describes social phenomena in the form of narative. The result of this study shows that the characters experience physical oppression by slap and kick during work. This study is also found out the resistance that is done by POWs that is, take an action of suggestion and breaking a rule at workplace. Keywords: Labor, Oppression, Physical Oppression, Resistance.
