Abstract

The title of this thesis is “Ambivalence Identity in Camilla Gibb’s Sweetness in the Belly”. This study aims to analyze the ambivalence felt by the main character and to reveal how the main character survives the contradiction of her identity in Camilla Gibb's novel Sweetness in the Belly (2005). This novel is about the journey of Lilly as the main character finds her identity. There are struggles that she faced from people around her. As a west, she can survive on her own in the end. The object of this research was a novel from Camilla Gibb Sweetness in the Belly (2005). Data that the writer used in the form of words and quotes were analyzed using Post�Colonialism theory by Homi K. Bhabha (1994) about ambivalence. A qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. The results of this study indicated that ambivalence was described by several aspects; a fear which was caused by colonialization of the west to east in the past, a western identity that the main character faced was hard to get rid of and never completely lost and unhomeliness that main character felt. There are many obstacles that the main character has to go through to survive in an environment that is not fit in and finding her true self. She works hard to identify herself in one place with her efforts such as adapting the local culture national dress, consuming local culture, and joining old fellow consanguinity to learn more about Islam.
