Abstract

The study aims to analyze how the borderline personality disorder of the main characters is represented in the novel in which the main characters experience mental illness. The object of this study is a novel book entitled The Friend (2018) by Sigrid Nunez. This study applies the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of text. The data sources are literary data. To guide this study, the writer uses the perspective of Sigmund Freud (1923) in the theory of psychoanalysis. The results of this study indicate that the character experienced personality disorder in the form of problems with relationships, unstable emotions, impulsive behavior, and self-damaging. These criteria of borderline personality disorder are all developed by the character. The criteria developed by this character are obtained when the main character has a traumatic event in the past, she is abandoned by her lover, which she must struggle to survive. Since the death of her lover, she has had a borderline personality disorder. Because she has a borderline personality disorder, so she has instability in her self-esteem. However, the personality disorder that the character experienced did not make her give up. She overcame borderline personality disorder with does several actions such as avoiding crowds and taking meditation.
