Abstract

The aims of this study are 1) to find out the type of idioms in The Punisher: War Zone subtitle, 2) to find out what strategies are used in translating the English idiom, and 3) to find out the equivalences in meaning of the translated idioms. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The theory from Hockett’s types of idioms is applied in this study, and Baker and Newmark propose the translation strategies used in this study. Meanwhile, the writer used Bell’s theory to find out how the equivalences. There are 118 data found in The Punisher: War Zone movie subtitle. The writer used note-taking techniques and listening observation. From 118 data, 77 idioms (65.2%) belong to slang, the next is figures of speech with 19 idioms or (16.1%) of data, English phrasal compound with 15 idioms or (12.7%) of data, 6 idioms or (5%) of data belong to the abbreviation, and the least types of idioms that appeared are proper name with 1 idiom or (1%). The writer found five strategies for translating the idioms. Translating by paraphrase dominates with 49 idioms or (41.5%), the next is 27 idioms or (23%) of data are translated by literal translation, third, 26 idioms or (22%) of data are translated by similar meaning dissimilar forms, next, 11 idioms or (9.3%) of data are translated by omission, and the least translation strategies used are 5 idioms or (4.2%) translated by similar meaning similar forms. For the equivalence, increased meaning dominates the data with 51 idioms or (43.2%), next, decreased meaning with 25 idioms or (21.2%), third, there are 20 idioms or (17%) of data uses different meaning, then, 11 idioms or (9.3%) of data uses fully equivalent, and the least of the equivalence in translation which are 11 idioms or (9.3%), belong with no meaning.
