Abstract

This study entitled “Antisocial Personality Disorder Reflected in We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver”, focuses on how the antisocial personality disorder portrayed by Kevin’s character and what the parenting styles found in the novel as the cause of Kevin’s antisocial personality disorder. The qualitative approach is used in conducting this study. To analyze the data, the writer applied psychoanalytic theory from Sigmund Freud (1923) who classified the structure of human personality as a basic theory and to support this analysis, Lynam’s theory (2010) which mentioned the characteristics of psychopathy or antisocial personality disorder is also used. In addition, to explain the cause of antisocial personality disorder uses theory of parenting style by Diana Baumrind (1971). The finding indicates that Kevin experiences the antisocial personality disorder, such as suspicious, manipulative, selfish, opposition, callous, cold, daring, rash, unconcerned, low in positive emotions, and undependable which too controlled by the id. The cause of his actions is his parents who have permissive parenting and authoritarian parenting.
