Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the issue of prejudice in Cynthia Kadohata’s novel Weedflower (2006). This study focuses on describing the forms of prejudice that occur in the concept of postcolonial and the effects of prejudice on the main character in the novel. This study applies the postcolonial theory of Orientalism by Edward W. Said. This study was conducted by using the qualitative method. In this study, the writer emphasizes the main character named Sumiko and her family members who are the object of prejudice. The analysis of this study shows that the existence of prejudice from white Americans against Japanese�Americans living in the United States after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor led to an increase in anti-Japanese sentiment. The forms of prejudice described by white Americans include: stereotype, segregation, and discrimination directed at Japanese-Americans. Furthermore, there are effects of prejudice that affect Sumiko as the main character becomes submissive in response to the domination of white Americans.
