Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze racial discrimination in Jewell Parker Rhodes’ Black Brother Black Brother. The writer only focuses on the racial discrimination against Donte Ellison as the main character. The objectives of the study are to explain the portrayal and the resistance to racial discrimination that is faced by the main character. Donte Ellison is a child with mixedrace parents, he looks more like his mother is a black person. One day, Mrs. Ellison was transferred to work and the Ellison family moved to California. Donte's mother decided that Middlefield Prep's school is the best, but Donte had a lot of trouble at school. In collecting data, the writer used qualitative methods to find racial discrimination using stigma perspectives in the main character of Donte Ellison. This study used the stigma perspective by Erving Goffman’s theory (1963) which explains discrimination, the normal, the wise, stereotype, exclusion, and prejudice. The analysis results show that Donte Ellison experienced discrimination treatment that occurred in the school area which refers to racial differences and affected Donte Ellison’s life. However, at the end of the story, Donte Ellison can overcome problems through struggles in the field of sports and achievement at school.
