Abstract

This study is entitled “Power Resistance in The Lighthouse: Illuminating Domination, Subjugation, and Exploitation.” This study aims to analyze the power relations between a lighthouse keeper and his supervisor in terms of how power is exercised by the supervisor and how power is resisted by the assistant. The object of the study is taken from a film entitled The Lighthouse (2019), written and directed by Robert Eggars. The film tells the story of two lighthouse keepers who get stranded on a remote island off the coast of New England in the 1890s when a massive storm hits the island. Left with nothing but alcohol as their emergency food supply, both characters slowly but steadily slip into a strange, toxic relationship. Struggling to survive until relief arrives, the power balance between supervisor and assistant worsens as both characters give in to isolation and alcohol abuse. This study uses the qualitative method to present the findings in both essay and picture form by examining the narrative and cinematography elements. Moreover, the grand literary criticism approach of post-modernism is used to address the issues presented in the film, specifically from Michel Foucault’s theory regarding power, power relations, and power resistance, which dictate that his goal is to understand what it means to be human subjects that imply that studying power and power relations is part of a bigger picture where power relations is a mode of actions on possible actions exercised towards others and power resistance is a response against the exercise of power which can be used to identify how power works, the forms they take, and how it is imposed. The results of the study show that the supervisor exercises power in the form of domination, subjugation, and exploitation of the assistant. At the same time, the assistant displays power resistance against those forms of power.
