Abstract

The study describes the struggle of the black characters as a minority to be accepted in the white community. Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man is a novel that tells about a young black man character living underground because others refuse to see him. He has gone underground to write the story of his life and invisibility. The character described the struggle of being a young African American in white supremacy. This research is a qualitative study applying the content of the analysis method. The writer used prejudice and discrimination in Allport's (1954) theory to reveal of the nature of the needs and situations in the novel. From the data analysis, the writer found that African Americans is facing some problems such as discrimination, prejudice, and violence in society. Also, African Americans has to struggle to be accepted in the white community. The representation of prejudice and discrimination in this novel also have positive and negative feelings, impacts, and attitudes from the society.
