Abstract

This study aims to analyze the violation of maxims in Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts segment. The objective of the study was to identify the types of maxim violations and find out the function of the host or guests performing violation of maxim in Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts segment. The writer used Grice’s theory of cooperative principle in analyzing the types of violation of maxim in the segment and theory of Cook to find out the function of maxim violation. This study applied a qualitative descriptive approach since this study. The data were collected from the utterances that were uttered by the host or the guests containing violation of maxim. The writer collected the data by transcribing videos of the Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts segment in 2017-2020. The result of the study shows that there were four types of maxim violation performed by the host or the guests in Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts segment: Quality, Quantity, Relation, and Manner. Meanwhile, the functions were to respect the hearer, to create hyperbole or irony, to change the topic, to keep the secret, and to create humor.
