Abstract

The title of this study is “The Mirror Stage in Darcey Bell’s A Simple Favor Novel: Lacanian Psychoanalysis”. The aim of this study is to reveal the issue of the mirror stage and ways to solve that problem faced by the main character. The object of this study is a novel entitled “A Simple Favor” (2017) written by Darcey Bell. It portrays Stephanie, a widowed and blogger mother of five-year-old Miles, who lives alone in the suburbs until she meets Emily, the mother of Nicky, Miles’ best friend. Everything was fine until Stephanie heard the news that Emily had disappeared. The police were involved, but based on the preliminary evidence Stephanie and Emily’s husband found, they concluded that Emily left because she needed a break from her life. This study applied a qualitative research method as the analysis presented in the form of text. In order to guide this study, the writer used the mirror stage of Jacques Lacan (1977) in the psychoanalysis theory. The results of this study show that there are three stages of the mirror stage; The Real (needs), The Imaginary (demands), and The Symbolic (desires), and there are also ways to solve the mirror stage such as self-adjustment and social adjustment through the main character.
