Abstract
This study entitled “Conversational Implicature in Art of Action on Scott Adkins Selected Podcasts YouTube Channel”. This study was aimed to analyze the types of conversational implicature, the functions of conversational implicature, and its implied meaning. The objects of this study were taken from two selected podcasts by Scott Adkins YouTube Channel. This study used qualitative research method as the analysis presented in the form of essay. The writer used the theory of Yule (1996) to analyze the types of conversational implicature and the theory of Searle (1979) to analyze the functions of conversational implicature and its implied meaning. The analysis resulted 35 conversational implicature in the utterance of the host and the guests. There were three types of conversational implicature; those were 19 generalized conversational implicatures, 9 particularized conversational implicatures, and 7 scalar implicatures. Based on its function, there were 18 implicatures included to assertive, 11 implicatures included to expressive, 3 implicatures included to commisive, 2 utterances included to directive, and 1 utterance included to declarative. The result showed that generalized conversational implicature was the most dominant implicature since the speaker did not need any specific context to create an implied meaning and the dominant function was assertive since the speaker gave an opinion and criticized something untrue. It could be concluded that understanding the context of the conversation was very important to give another meaning to what the speaker’s uttered. Even though the speaker provided meaning without referring to the related context, the speaker noticed to the response that would be understood by the listener through the context that was currently happening.
