Abstract

Lexical relation is a method to classify the relation of meaning in each word. They are mostly used to analyze word meanings in terms of their relationships to one another inside sentences. These relationships differ depending on the type of relationship that a word may have with another word or words. This study focuses on not only lexical relation but also figurative language, which means the language that contains non-literal meaning implied in the words or expressions in it; it can be another meaning behind in order to describe something by associating it with something else. By focusing on lexical relation and figurative language aims to analyze the types of both to produce humor in children’s books “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the Ugly Truth” which were published in 2010. This study uses qualitative methods: the data already exists in the form of sentences and phrases, and follows the theories from Yule (2010) and Abrams (1999). Based on the analyzes, this study found five types lexical relation: synonymy, antonymy, wordplay, metonymy and homophone. Five types of figurative language also show: personification, metaphor, hyperbole, simile and irony. The humorous effects appear in the data that use lexical relation and figurative language in it when it turns out to be sarcasm or satire.
