Abstract
This study aims to identify the stages of culture shock and the representation of culture shock effects experienced by the main character in Other Words for Home novel by Jasmine Warga (2019). This novel portrays the story of a 12-year-old Syrian girl named Jude who has to stay in America because of the chaos in her hometown, Syria. She faces several problems related to the cultural difference between both countries. To analyze the novel, this study uses Akarowhe’s theory (2018) of the effects of culture shock on adolescent students and Winkelman’s theory (1994) of the stages of cultural shock. The qualitative method is also applied in this study since the result of the study will be presented in the text. This study found that the main character experiences three of six effects of culture shock and also the four stages of cultural shock. The effects of cultural shock are communicative defectiveness, conflict, and emotional imbalance; meanwhile, the stages of cultural shock found are the honeymoon phase, cultural shock phase, adjustment, reorientation, and gradual recovery phase, and lastly adaptation, resolution, or acculturation phase
