Abstract

This study tried to analyse the social isolation that occurs in the main character in the “Cost of Living” drama script. The object of this study was a drama script entitled “Cost of Living” (2015) by Martyna Majok. The main character named Jess was described as a teenager who does not have a family and lives alone resulting was socially isolated because she did not have a social network that she could use to communicate. This study applies the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of text. In order to guide this study, the writer used the perspective of Hortulanus et al (2006). The result of the study shows life events, personal competencies, health, and formal and informal support were used to characterize social isolation Jess, which includes not having a family and living alone, low personal competencies in social life, low health due to stressed from challenges faced, and a lack of support. Jess's social isolation was also depicted as a reduction in her sense of well-being, less enjoyment, and feeling socially useless. In dealing with social isolation, the main character did three actions. The first action was to work hard, which was done to manage unhappy youth. The second action was being open-minded, which was done to manage generational isolation, and the last action was to have been strong, which was done to manage relationships with family.
