Abstract

This study is entitled “Gender Bending Identity in Ali Smith’s How to be Both Novel” the purpose of this study is to describe the issue of gender-bending identity portrayed in How to be Both and describe how the character’s response in dealing with societal norms of her gender-bending identity. The study uses a theoretical book by Judith Butler (1999) entitled Gender Trouble: Feminism and Subversion of Identity. The writer uses a qualitative method to contain the data. The result of this study indicates several images of gender-bending identity that happened in the novel, such as cross-dressing, androgyny style, and sexual orientation, and the main character who finally deals with her identity.
