Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types, motives, and functions of taboo words. The object of this study is a YouTube content from Sidemen: Tinder in Real Life. The method of this study is qualitative approach as the analysis presented in the table and essay form. The theory that the writer used to analyze types and motives of taboo words is from Jay (1992) and for the functions of taboo words is from Wardhaugh (2006). The writer collected the data for this study by watching the video and taking notes for the dialogues that contain taboo words. The results of this study showed that there are 20 words of taboo words founds. For the types of taboo words, there are 7 data; 5 words for Vulgarity; 4 words for Insults and slurs; 4 words for Obscenity; 3 words for Epithets; 2 words for Profanity; and 2 words for Scatology. Furthermore, there are 5 data for the motives of taboo words; 10 words for Joking; 3 words for Descriptive-Evaluative; 3 words for Sarcastic Irony; 2 words for Anger or Frustration; 2 words for Surprise. Meanwhile, there are 3 data for the functions of taboo words; 12 words for to draw attention to oneself; 5 data for to show contempt; 3 data for to be aggressive or provocative. The findings of this study show that using taboo words conducted for a variety of reasons.
