Abstract
This study aims to analyze the struggle for individual freedom in the cycle of domestic violence represented in the novel Safe Haven (2010) by Nicholas Sparks. The title of this study is “Individual Freedom in the Cycle of Violence Represented in Nicholas Sparks' Safe Haven (2010)”. This study uses a qualitative research method that presents the analysis in the form of a description. This study combines the cycle of violence theory by Lenore E. A. Walker and the perspective of individual freedom in existentialism theory by Jean-Paul Sartre to guide the analysis. The analysis shows Katie Feldman, the main character, trapped in the cycle of violence directed by her abusive husband, which includes the tensionbuilding phase, the acute battering incident phase, and the loving-contrition phase. The possibility of death in the cycle of violence becomes the point of departure for Katie to end her abusive marriage and struggle for her individual freedom. Katie's struggle for her individual freedom is represented through her choices and responsibilities. Katie's individual freedom gives her the right to be free from the shadows of domestic violence and makes her live in peace.
