Abstract
The purposes of this study are to analyze childhood trauma faced by the main characters of novel “God Help the Child”, the effects of childhood trauma on the personality structure of the novel's main characters and how the characters handle these traumas. The object of this study is the novel by Toni Morrison, "God Help the Child", with an analytical focus on the main characters Bride and Booker. Data collection is carried out using qualitative methods by reading the novel "God Help the Child." The theory of psychoanalysis, “The Ego and the Id” (1962) and “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” (1961) by Sigmund Freud are used as a primary approach in the analysis supported by the Defense Mechanism theory (1993) written by Anna Freud in her book, "The Ego and the Mechanism of Defense." The study result showed that traumas faced by the main character, Bride, in the form of trauma due to discrimination, neglect, and guilt. As a result of the traumas, Bride grows into a narcissistic individual. Booker, who lost a loved one, grows up to be a heroic man for others but runs away from his problems. The two characters deal with trauma with different defence mechanisms, Bride with undoing and denial, Booker with reaction formation and avoidance.
