Abstract

Tanya Landman's novel entitled Buffalo Soldier is a historical fiction novel that won the Carnegie Medal in 2015 it tells about a black slave named Charlotte who received discriminatory treatment from white people, the act of discrimination shows the conditions in the 1860s in America. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of racial discrimination and to analyze the impact of racial discrimination found in the novel Buffalo Soldier. By using the theoretical ideas of Fred L. Pincus (2018) the author uses qualitative descriptive as an analytical method. The results of this study indicate that there are two types of discrimination seen in this novel; individual discrimination and institutional discrimination. These acts of discrimination reflect the conditions of the transatlantic slave trade in which some Africans were trafficked into slavery by whites. Moreover, racial discrimination in Buffalo Soldiers causes some bad impact on psychological health, and also causes genocide, and Slavery acts to the character in Buffalo Soldiers Novel.
