Abstract

This study aims to analyze the racial discrimination experienced by the character and the way characters deals with racial discrimination in If You Come Softly (1998) novel by Jacqueline Woodson. The racial discrimination is experienced by several characters in the novel, named Jeremiah, Elisha, and Carlton. The author uses the Critical Race Theory from Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic (2001) as a guideline in researching the objects used. In this study, the writer used qualitative method by collecting data from the novel and other sources to assist the writing of this study. The result of the study shows the writer finds several forms of racial discrimination such as everyday racism, differential racialization, social construction, and intersectionality are experienced by the characters in the If You Come Softly novel. Moreover, the characters also deal with the racial discrimination by avoiding and sharing their experiences.
