Abstract

The study entitled "An Analysis of Connotative Meanings in Ariana Grande’s Selected Song Lyrics" aims to reveal the connotative meaning implied in these lyrics and describe the overall message delivered by these songs. This study is using theoretical framework of Geoffrey Leech. Data were taken from Ariana Grande’s song lyrics which consist of six lyrics from different albums. Ariana Grande’s songs were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach to find their denotative and connotative meaning. 47 data were collected in this study, and the result that can be found after the writer conducted this study is that connotative meanings do exist in the lyrics, indicating that connotative meaning can be the main language device in revealing the singer’s message. The connotative was found to be more dominant than the denotative meaning. It is a clear indication that artists like Ariana Grande often use a blend of both connotative and denotative meanings to craft creative narratives, creating rich emotions and ideas that resonate with their audience. Additionally, this study encourages future research into the interaction of linguistic elements in songwriting, thereby providing a deeper understanding of the art behind the music itself.
