Abstract
This study entitled “Power Relations Portrayed in Jeanne DuPrau’s The City of Ember”, aimed to examine how power relations and power resistances are depicted in The City of Ember novel by Jeanne DuPrau (2003). The novel described the Ember city was in danger since the generator which is the main source of the city repeatedly ran out of power which result in darkness. The city has a leader called Mayor Cole, instead of serving the city, he did some deeds which suffered his citizen, and Lina, the main character of the novel, tried to unveil the mayor’s crime and save the city. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative method in which the data are presented in the form of an essay in narrative descriptive. The analysis used the theory of power by Michel Foucault (1978). From the data analysis, it was found that power relations in the novel are seen through Mayor Cole and the children, the mayor has to control the children’s jobs after graduating from school. Mayor Cole and his assistant’s relationship can be seen when the mayor engaged them to help him steal the food supplies. Then, Mayor Cole and the guard’s relationship can be seen in that the guards always obey the mayor’s command, and also the relationship between Mayor Cole and the citizen of Ember can be seen through how the mayor controlled the citizen. However, the resistance to power also can be seen through the resistance toward Mayor Cole by the children who tried to uncover the mayor’s evil deeds and the citizen of Ember who always demonstrated demanding a solution from the mayor since the city suffered from hunger and darkness.
