Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the intimacy vs isolation stages and to identify the main characters who face intimacy vs isolation in the novel. The object of this research is a novel entitled Convenience Store Woman (2016) by Sayaka Murata. This study uses a qualitative method that presents analysis in writing, both conversation and narrative. For this study, the theory used was Erik Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development (1968). One of the stages in Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development is the sixth stage, intimacy vs isolation, early adulthood. In this study, the main character experienced problems in establishing intimacy both within the family, friends and partners so that in the end they felt isolated or felt foreign and felt different from society in general. A decision that takes the main character, namely to maintain whatever she believes so far and chooses to ignore the views of other people. The result showed that at every stage in human development not everything can run as it should be. There are a small group of people who experience obstacles and differences.
