Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the kinds and meaning of onomatopoeic terms in the Marvel Digital Comic "Oz: The Complete Collection" by Eric Shanower and Skottie Young. This study applies descriptive qualitative research method as the analysis presented in the form of text and pictures. The study dives into the various sorts of onomatopoeic terminology, as well as their lexical and contextual interpretations. Bredin's (2008) onomatopoeia classification and Meyerhoff's (2006) theory of meaning serve as theoretical frameworks for this study. The analysis result show there are several kinds of onomatopoeia in this study. The data show that direct onomatopoeia, associative onomatopoeia and exemplary onomatopoeia are present. Each type of onomatopoeia offers a different meaning: direct onomatopoeia provides clear readings meaning from the onomatopoeic words, associative onomatopoeia provides meaning through association, rather than mimicking the sound itself involves a connection of concepts or objects, and exemplary onomatopoeia provides meaning that focus in emphasizes terms that demand effortful articulation.
