Abstract

This study presents the portrait of racial discrimination experienced by Black people. The aim of this study is to analyze the types of racial discrimination and the responses of the main characters toward racial discrimination in a novel written by an American author. The object of this study is a novel entitled The Vanishing Half (2020) by Brit Bennett. To analyze the data of this study, the writer uses a descriptive qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of text or dialogues. In addition, libraries and the internet are used to get some information that supports the study as well. This study applies the Critical Race Theory (CRT) proposed by Delgado and Stefancic (2012). The result of this study shows that there are three types of racial discrimination found in the novel. They are individual racial discrimination, systemic racial discrimination, and cultural racial discrimination. Individual racial discrimination itself has two subtypes, namely active and inactive individual racism. The second type of racial discrimination is systemic racial discrimination. There are two subcategories of this type, namely institutional and structural racial discrimination. The last type is cultural racial discrimination. The existence of racial discrimination leads the main characters to respond to this situation. This study found that there are three responses of the main characters toward racial discrimination, namely internalized racism, rebellion, and alienation as their survival mechanism.
