Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the gender-based violence and to reveal how women deal with gender-based violence that is portrayed in novel fiction in which women are commonly the targets of violence due to their inferior status. The object of the study is a novel by Lisa Allen-Agostini entitled The Bread The Devil Knead (2021). This study is conducted utilizing a qualitative approach method as the analysis presented in the form of description. The writer uses the feminist perspective by Simone De Beauvoir (2011) and theory from Holly Johnson, Natalia Ollus, and Sami Nevala (2008) to categorize the form of violence and the impact on women. The results of the study point that Alethea experiences several forms of gender-based violence such as: dominance and controlling; emotional abuse; and childhood abuse, also the impact such as physical injury and fearing for her life. Besides, Alethea does several actions to deal with violence such as: be independent woman and speaking out. Eventually, Alethea cannot leave or report him. Because of pressure on society and the closer relationship between them, so that she is less likely to report the crime to the police or seek other assistance.
